Please your honours, said he, I'm able,

By means of a secret charm, to draw

All creatures living beneath the sun,

That creep, or swim, or fly, or run,

After me so as you never saw!

And I chiefly use my charm

On people that do people harm
― The Rat King

Bless the Rat King.

Bless his passing. Bless the thunder of his feet.

As the guns thunder, as the cordite smoke blots out the sun, as the brass falls like hot rain upon the ash of a thousand dead. I shall not fear.

For the Rat King guards my steps.

Description

The Rat King is a hijacked Europan Medium Mech that spawns for the King of Kings quest but can randomly spawn at other times. The Rat King is one of the few enemies in the game that does not attack the player and is green when pinged. Kills by this mech can leave Rat King residue (whether or not you have the quest), which is required to complete its quest. It has a modified large head that is a combination of a skull and a clown. It is not immortal like Toothy is currently but doesn't collapse when killed.

The Rat King can appear on all maps that can accommodate a medium mech with the exception of Mech Trenches.

Strategy

The Rat King is not hostile towards the player. However, the Rat King can step on and crush the player. If you are after the loot regardless, it is usually enough to wait for the Rat King to eventually succumb to the entire map aggroing him.

The King can be destroyed by powerful enemies such as Toothy, the Euruskan OrgaMech, or Medium Mechs. You can also destroy it yourself, in which case, the strategy is the same as with the Europan Medium Mechs.

The Railgun is the intended weapon for players to eliminate mechs. However, it requires a 3-player team to assemble. You can also destroy them with about 15 Grenade Launcher hits or 30 20mm hits.

If you choose to attack the King:

  • Bring lots of ammo, medkits, and a Drill
  • Have solid cover to protect yourself from rockets and machine gun fire
  • Consider waiting for him to be weakened or distracted by hostile forces--the King will prioritize attacking other units even when attacked by scavs
  • Make sure there are no enemies near you that will interfere with your fight
  • Keep your distance to not get stomped. The mech can approach you deceptively fast when aggroed
  • Prioritize destroying the rocket pods on its shoulders and the cannon in its arms to disable its most powerful attacks

Attacking the King is guaranteed to attract Hunter Killers and will bring your reputation with Scavengers to 0. You can bring it back to max by selling the Rat King Codex as long as you don't sell it to Bunco, who pays much less for it than other traders.

Loot

The King is guaranteed to drop one "Need to Drill Open" container directly below it. As the name suggests, you need a Drill to search it and drilling takes 60 seconds.

In addition, 3 "Exo Debris" are forcefully ejected in the air in a similar manner to Europan Exos. A Tactical Camera can help find the scattered containers.

Need to Drill Open always contains:

Exo Debris may contain:

As of writing, the Codex is the most valuable item in the game at 640,625 Cr. You also get around 64,000 XP for extracting it.

Trivia

  • The Rat King is the mech depicted on the mural in the Innards.
  • Shooting the Rat King will significantly decrease the player's reputation with the Scavengers faction. Additionally, having a negative relationship with the Scavengers faction will cause the mech to become hostile to the player, and its name will appear as red when pinged.
  • The quote below the original mural art is an altered verse from the German folktale and poem Pied Piper of Hamelin
  • One of the coats of arms displayed on the back of the Rat King displays a vair renversé covered by a diagonal bande de gueules. In heraldic symbolism, a vair signifies nobility, dignity, and wealth, and a vair renversé expresses unusualness, exceptionality, or inverted order. The bande de gueules represents military strength, valor, and courage, often linked to warriors who have shed blood in battle for honor and loyalty.
