Euruskan Toothy Mech
Description
Toothy is a giant battle mech fielded by Euruskan forces in bodyguard and combat medic roles. So named for the crimson array of sensors located at the pinnacle of its torso resembling a leering grin of human dentures, it has a blocky physique with a fairly distinct silhouette due to its cape and body bags. Its left arm is humanoid in shape, but the right has been replaced with a heavy cannon that it uses to engage enemies with. One of its most distinct features is the ring attached to the upper section of the mech, on which multiple moving parts attached to it are given articulation, providing it with a wide range of coverage for its numerous functions, whether they be aggressive, defensive, or utilitarian. One of these parts is an articulated arm with a large, high rate of fire machine gun that resembles an upscaled MG42 attached to it, while another is a manipulator arm used to grasp objects or people, either for rescue or for harvesting. Ammo racks for its primary and secondary weapons have also been concepted, as well as capture cages for housing future bio-fuel victims.
It's most unique, but horrific attribute are the body bags strapped to the ring. While most Toothy units use these as emergency life support for wounded Euruskan infantry, transporting them away from combat zones for more dedicated medical care, other units have reportedly started using them as bio-batteries, turning their captives into bio-fuel to sustain it during extended operations. Those subdued in this manner are subsequently subjected to gruesome procedures over the course of their digestion period, being kept alive for the maximum duration possible so as to extract as much fuel and bioelectricity contained within the victim. Artificial organs are implanted to replace the failed originals. Anesthetic serums are injected to prevent potential struggling, only to be withheld once it has been determined the captive has been rendered too drained and atrophied to move, leaving them them fully aware in their final moments. Nanofluids break down remaining flesh, converting biomatter into energy.[1] Whatever remains that don't provide useful fuel, weapons, armor, or personal effects, are unceremoniously dumped and left for whichever individual or faction finds it first, continuing the cycle of life, death, and resources that drive the ecology of the future battlefield.
Location
Toothy will appear with some consistency in Scorched Enclave, defending the Collapsed Pipe East extraction point. It will appear during day time and will also appear in Night Shift with a unique, ashen appearance. Toothy can also be seen on Stairway Gate.
Toothy will also appear alongside the Euruskan Commander if he is present, usually in the center of the Scorched Enclave bunker network.
Strategy
- Avoid engagement if at all possible. Toothy is too durable and will regularly defeat multiple Europan Exos and Mechs in a single battle, and unlike other mechs will actively initiate fights with infantry units, including Scavs.
- Toothy will rely on its shoulder-mounted machinegun against infantry. This part can be broken off with some focused fire.
- Engaging Toothy at close range is ill-advised. It has a grab attack that will see it use its shoulder arm to grab nearby infantry, and deposit them into one of the body bags. This currently immediately kills the infantry - Scavs included - and is uninterruptible once the grab animation has started.
- Toothy is highly aggressive and can be easily lured away from its post to start fights with Europan assets. Use patience, or lure Europan units toward it to give you an opening to escape.
- While the Pyro Revealed quest is active, you can lure Pyro to engage Toothy. Toothy will almost always win the fight, but Pyro will keep it occupied for a good, long period of time.
Despite being indestructible by normal means, Toothy can be disabled using around 5 Railgun shots, which will cause it to drop a drillable Codex container.
Loot
- Toothy Codex (requires a Railgun to drop and a Drill to unlock)
Quests
A Toothy mech will always accompany the Euruskan Commander if a quest spawns one in.
Trivia
- There are reports of rogue Toothy units that have split away from Euruskan forces and will engage any units they see.
- A rogue Toothy is the antagonist of the first cinematic trailer, preying on the original Scav team.
- There are plans for Toothy to have additional 'mites' supporting it - insectoid, isopod-esque mechanical units that aid Toothy in a variety of tasks ranging from reconnaissance, swarm CQB tactics, retrieval of biofuel sources/prisoners, and ad hoc explosive reactive armor to increase Toothy's level of protection, but these are not implemented yet.
- It's possible for Toothy to spawn more than once per map. For example, in the bunker area in the north end of Scorched Enclave and while that one is active, another Toothy mech can spawn as the Euruskan commander's bodyguard near the pipe extraction point.
